كسرت الغيوم ظهر اليوم في سان فرانسيسكو وبدأت الشمس تشرق. تسبب الطقس الدافئ القادم في شعور مألوف للغاية, يجب أن أخرج لأجمع الحشرات ولا أجلس في الداخل! بينما كنت بالفعل في عدد قليل من الأماكن هذا الربيع, لدي موسم طويل من التجميع في المستقبل. أتطلع إلى الأمام ، لا يسعني إلا أن أفكر في العامين الماضيين المذهلين اللذين منحني إياه الغرب. لتوضيح إدماني, هنا شرح لنقاط GPS الخاصة بي في Google Earth.
يمثل كل علم حدث تجميع منفصل (تجاهل الدبابيس الصفراء), بين الخريف 2007 والشتاء 2009. لم أقم بتتبع الأميال المخصصة لرحلات التجميع (ربما لتجنب الصدمة), ولكن يجب أن يقترب 30,000. قد لا تكون سيارتي هوندا أكورد مركبة ميدانية نموذجية, ولكنه يجعل المسافة معقولة إلى حد كبير. بالطبع لا يساعد الإطاران المسطحان والزجاج الأمامي المتصدع. يمكنك بسهولة معرفة أنني عشت في جنوب كاليفورنيا مع تلك الكتلة العملاقة من الأعلام. يتركز معظم هؤلاء في مقاطعة سانتا باربرا, التي أسفرت عن نوعين جديدين وعشرات من سجلات المقاطعات. تأتي أريزونا في المرتبة الثانية برصيد اثنين 10 رحلات نهارية مع كل ليلة في مكان مختلف. ثم تحررت من الجنوب الغربي الصيف الماضي وقادت حلقة طويلة عبر الغرب الأوسط على مدار أسبوعين ونصف. لقد انسحبت 4,000 lepidoptera وبدأت للتو في وضع اللمسات الأخيرة على آخر العينات. إلى هذا الحد, نوع واحد فقط جديد – عينة وحيدة من Acrolophidae صغير من غرب تكساس (تم تحديده بواسطة Peter Jump الذي يكتب كراسة MONA عن المجموعة). بقي الكثير من أجل الهوية.
على السبورة لهذا العام: رحلة إلى ليفنوورث, واشنطن من أجل 2010 عالم بقشريات الأجنحة’ اجتماع المجتمع. رحلة الجمع التي تستغرق أسبوعين ستنطلق شمالًا إلى واشنطن ثم تدور شرقًا عبر أيداهو, يوتا ونيفادا في طريق العودة إلى المنزل. لكن كالعادة, أريزونا والمكسيك منارة. والآن بعد أن عشت في بيركلي ، سيتعين علي الدخول إلى سييرا عدة مرات هذا العام!
Cool map – how’d you make it?
I’ve got a hard map on the wall in my study with a red glasshead pin at each collecting locality I’ve visited since 1982 (yep, I’m that old!). No question the west and Mexico are where it’s at, but in recent years I’ve become quite enamored with the Great Plains – the whole place seems to have been sort of unfairly ignored.
I connect my GPS to Google Earth, which allows me to download the waypoints and tracks. The end product is incidental, but it’s really wonderful to have all of your collecting points mapped automatically! I can also go backwards from my database, with a click of a button it creates a google earth map of the distribution of my specimens.
Well heck – sounds like I need to get a better GPS, since mine has no download capabilities.
BTW, I’m really liking your blog. There are lots of insect bloggers out there, but not that many who really know what they’re talking about. (And I just noticed the linkback – thanks.)
I suppose you could achieve the same goal by manually entering your waypoints and placing a pin on google earth. A bit slower though when you collect as much as me (I assume you do!).

You should make a trip to central NY…our woods are packed with moths. In fact, the porch light has been flooded with moths, I should take some pics and make you ID them 😉
Im going to have to steal (er, I mean imitate) your photography set up for the lab. I had to take some photos of teeny-tiny hymenopteran parasitoids for a Canadian collaborator last week and the pics turned out hideous 🙁
I ended up just sending him the specimens, which then involved a whole new set of headaches with customs.
