હું ઠોકર ખાઈ ગયો (stumbleupon પર નથી) પર આ રંગીન SEM છબીઓ ટેલિગ્રાફ વેબપેજ આજે. મને ખાસ કરીને કેલિફોરીડે લાર્વાની આ છબી ગમે છે (પ્રોટોફોર્મિયા એસપી.) જે પ્રકૃતિ કરતાં સી-રેટેડ સાયન્સ ફિક્શન મૂવીમાંથી વધુ લાગે છે. તે મને એક જ સમયે એક વિચિત્ર સ્ટાર વોર્સ પાત્ર અને મપેટ બંનેની યાદ અપાવે છે. પ્રમાણભૂત સસ્તન પ્રાણીઓના શરીરના આર્કિટેક્ચરમાંથી અચાનક પ્રસ્થાન જંતુઓને અન્ય-દુન્યવી એલિયન્સ માટે મુખ્ય ઉમેદવાર બનાવે છે. ડિસ્ટ્રિક્ટ જેવી ફિલ્મો માટે માર્ગદર્શક તરીકે જંતુઓનો ઉપયોગ થયો હોવો જોઈએ 9, સ્ટારશિપ ટ્રુપર્સ, એલિયન, ગેલેક્સી ક્વેસ્ટ… માત્ર થોડા તાજેતરના નામ આપવા માટે. મને ખાતરી છે કે અન્ય, વધુ સારી રીતે માન્યતા પ્રાપ્ત, ત્યાંના સાય-ફાઇ ગીક્સ વધુ સારા ઉદાહરણો વિશે વિચારી શકે છે. તે જ રેખાઓ સાથે મને આ છબીઓ યાદ છે જે મેં નીચે એક સેરેમ્બીસીડે ભમરોથી ખેંચી હતી – મોનેલેમ ગીગાસ. This was in the earliest days of my new camera so I can’t look back on them as perfect shots.
But if aliens landed here in spite of Stephen Hawking, and looked anything like this, I’d be amazed at the convergence and would dream instantly of little human-like pests dashing under their feet. It would be incredible to actually find an alien of any order, and even more incredible to see what evolution has done with it. Perhaps we share a common ancestry, or are thoroughly novel molecule by molecule. The likelihood of this happening in my lifetime is very near zero and this may even remain a question that future generations of scientists shall forever be left dreaming about.
