Questo GOP è meno di una sfida e di più di una semplice carrellata di miserabile stock photography. Alex Selvaggio e altri hanno da tempo evidenziato le enormi carenze di molti siti di stock photo – ma ecco una breve e dolorosa carrellata LEP con Google.
Passo 1: Ricerca immagini “falena sul fiore”.
Passo 2: Facepalm.
Ecco una didascalia della prima pagina dei risultati. Escludendo le foto che non hanno falene e sono “fiori falena” (= Phalaenopsis orchidee) – solo 4 su 18 le immagini sono corrette! Potrei darti 6/18 se si contano due, ovviamente, in scena le foto… ma ecco la mia lista di motivi che iniziano con 1 = alto a sinistra e 26 = In basso a destra. (elencare qui di seguito)
1) Ok, buon inizio! Questo appare come un Manduca specie (Sphingidae) alimentazione su una Datura fiore. Ho visto io stesso in natura – grande cattura!

3) Downhill andiamo. Ovviamente una farfalla – Phoebis specie (Pieridae).
4) Lycaenidae farfalla – Callophrys specie.
5) Hesperiidae – skipper farfalla.
6) Un altro falena! Sembra un Autographa specie (Noctuidae).
7) Certamente una falena, però una cosa che mi conoscono.
8 ) Hyles sphinx falena nectaring. Blurry, ma una falena!
9) Un altro skipper. Solo perché è marrone non significa che sia una falena.

11) Luna falena sul fiore. Ok, sì, è una falena – ma mi dispiace, una bella messa in scena, ovviamente, fotografia. Actias luna non ha un apparato boccale – che non avevo mai trovato uno volentieri seduto su un fiore.

14) Vanessa farfalla! Ho pensato che il Painted Lady era circa come ovvio di una farfalla il più possibile.

19) Cisseps falena (Arctiinae) – la nostra ultima fotografia falena reale. La pagina web ha lo identificato come Pyromorpha dimidiata (Zygaenidae), tuttavia le antenne sono sbagliate e questo è molto probabilmente una falena tigre nella Ctenuchinae.
20) Oh, andiamo, farfalla! Polygonia specie.
21) Falena – ma, messo in scena… Non ho mai incontrato un riposo Sphingidae su un fiore come questo. Mentre questa famiglia prontamente nettari a fiori, non tendono a sedersi su di loro come idioti.

25) Peggiore in scena fotografia mai. E 'un esemplare diffusione che può o non può essere stato photoshopped sul fiore (sembra wonky). Rotto antenne, strappati ale… È anche possibile vedere l'ombra della cinghia della fotocamera sul forewing sinistro della falena. Eppure in qualche modo ha vinto una medaglia da qualche gruppo su Flickr.

I left a comment on that spread luna moth photo dissing them for nondisclosure of an obviously staged shot. It might get deleted, but for now it’s a nice juxtaposition to all the gushing comments like (to paraphrase), “Wow, you found that in the wild?” e “I never see these with enough light to get the shot.”
Here is another shocker for you Chris! Sì, there is a NZ endemic moth called the Magpie moth (Nyctemera annulata) but it is mostly black with a few white blotches and is an Arctiine rather than a Geometrid. There is another even more obvious photo mistake earlier in the article.
On the subject of the inability to identify moths butterflys etc and the lack of quality photos. The UK has recently seen several awful articles of moths and their food plants being portrayed as frankly destructive creatures. First story i have heard of is clothes moths (micros) the image used in the articel was several macro moths on a piece of material! The second a newspaper with a journalist with a huge grudge againt ragwort (basically a report of lies!)it was awful to read, just made me cringe to read it and how someone has so little knowledge of the natural world. Ragwort being an excellent species for wildlife in the UK.
