Thats a horse-headed grasshopper nymph. Maybe Proscopia luceomaculata?
Bingo – although you have a better species guess than I had come up with! It is indeed a Proscopiidae, a very strange group of Orthoptera that look like sticks. It’s a shame that Science News would get an order of insects wrong, but not surprising.
Those things are royally weird. I hope I can run into one for real some day.
